Tunnel Bluffs Hike, BC – Quick Hiking Guide

Hi and welcome back! Today’s post is about one of the more challenging hikes around Vancouver, Tunnel Bluffs! The views at the summit are gorgeous and make this hike completely worth the effort. If you’re looking for a challenging workout with stunning views, this hike is for you!

How to Get There

By car: trail access is located just off the Sea to Sky highway, shortly after you pass Lions Bay. The trailhead is easy to miss because you’re basically walking into the trees on the side of the highway. The hike is located across a small parking lot on the east side of the highway. One you’ve parked, you’ll have to cross the highway to get to the trailhead so be sure to use caution!

Tunnel Bluffs Quick Facts

This is intermediate level hike with most of it at a steep incline. It’s approximately 8km round trip or about 4.5-5 hours in duration. The views at the summit of Howe Sound and Horseshoe Bay are spectacular!! As tough as this hike is, the views are absolutely worth it!

When to Go

The trail to Tunnel Bluffs is open from May until November. The best time to go is on a clear sunny day to enjoy the best views. I recommend hiking this trail earlier on in the summer, on a day when the temperature outside is a little cooler because you’ll be working up quite a sweat to get to the summit. In my experience, there’s minimal hiker traffic on this trail.

What to Bring

Make sure to bring a ton of water! 2-3L per person is ideal if you’re able to carry it in your back pack. As I mentioned, this hike is tough and mostly uphill, so you’ll be working hard and likely sweating a lot as you hike up the trail. I always bring a small day bag and I’ll pack a lunch and some snacks like nuts and fruit. Sunscreen, a small first aid kit and your camera are also good items to bring! In terms of footwear, I prefer hiking boots on this trail for good grip and to minimize slipping. For a complete list of essential items to bring on a day hike, you can read my full blog post here.
