Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Gastown is an area that I’ve spent a lot of time in since moving to Vancouver in 2008, with good reason. I was lucky enough to have worked in the area for several years and it’s also one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Vancouver, especially for it’s bar scene. Gastown pretty much has it all from amazing restaurants and bars to coffee shops and shopping. If you’re new to the area, planning a trip to Vancouver or you’re interested getting a sweet recommendation for your next visit or night out, this is your Ultimate Guide to Gastown!
Where to Eat
There are soooo many food options in Gastown so here’s brief run down of my top recommendations.
I’m a huge fan of Catch 122 Bistro, located on Hastings Street near Abbott Street. It’s a really affordable and delicious place for brunch. There’s usually a line up on weekends.
Having worked in the area for so long, I’ve got the best lunch options nailed down. If you’re craving delicious tacos, Tacofino is fantastic. The line up for take out can be long but they have plenty of seating in the back of the restaurant and a patio in the summer. Virtrous Pie is a new vegan pizza place but don’t be scared! It’s actually really delicious. Bao Down is great Asian fusion cuisine and they play killer R&B music to enjoy while you eat. For a quick bite, Railtown Cafe is great option for casual sandwiches and salads (though it’s technically in Railtown, which is JUST outside of Gastown).
In no particular order, my dinner recommendations include: Chambar, Flying Pig, Nicli Antica Pizzeria, Cuchillo. They all have amazing food and with an awesome vibe, especially Chambar. Honorable mention: Ask for Luigi. This restaurant doesn’t take reservations and usually has a huge line, but the food is fantastic.
Where to Drink
Some of my favourite bars in Gastown are The Diamond (awesome cocktail list), Guilt and Co (great live music), Calabash (reggae music on Saturday night!) and Portside Pub (super popular). The last three bars on this list have dancing in the evenings on weekends.
My absolutely favourite place to grab coffee is at Prado Cafe. They serve 49th Parallel coffee which is so delicious. Another coffee place that’s a little newer to the ‘hood is Buro and it’s quickly becoming one of my faves.
Cadeaux bakery makes the most amazing cakes along with the best almond croissant you will ever have!
Where to Shop
Gastown has many smaller boutique stores from high end to eclectic. Two of my personal favourite places are The Latest Scoop for clothing and Letter No 8 for gift items and more unique/random pieces, simple jewellery etc.
Flatiron Building – located in the center of Gastown between Powell and Alexander Street.
Steam Clock – situated on Water Street at Cambie Street.
