Hello and thank you so much for stopping by my blog! I’m sooo ready for some spring weather and I’ve been craving a change of scenery so today I decided to make a getaway to one of my favourite places near the city. If you’re looking for a quick, fun day trip from Vancouver, then Bowen Island is the perfect spot. It’s relatively close, peaceful, quaint and absolutely gorgeous (and I love the ferry ride!)
Bowen Island is a place that I visit at least once every summer (there’s this beautiful beach on the other side of the island, more on that later!) It’s also an amazing spot for kayaking because it’s surrounded by mountains and beautiful scenery.
How to Get There
By sea – I love taking the ferry! I know there are regular ferry-goers who don’t think it’s anything special, but not me! I’m a huge fan – the trip is just so beautiful! Sailing on the water with gorgeous scenery in every direction, yesssss please. Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal is located in West Vancouver and from there it’s a quick 20 minute crossing to Bowen Island (Snug Cove).
What to Do
Snug Cove on Bowen Island is a very small community with restaurants, coffee shops and other artisan stores and boutiques. If you’re spending a full or half day on Bowen Island, there’s no need to bring a vehicle and most things are within walking distance. Interesting fact, hitch-hiking is common practice on Bowen Island; there are even dedicated hitchhiking pick-up areas!
One great spot to check out is Crippen Park. It’s SO pretty and it’s a two minute walk to the left of the ferry exit. There are several walking trails and hikes to do in Crippen Park in the spring and summer. If you’re not up for hiking, sitting on one of the benches and enjoying some tea (like I did today) while taking in the scenery is always an option.
Kayaking on Bowen Island is popular in the summer and it’s SO much fun, I highly recommend it! A great place for kayak rentals is Bowen Island Sea Kayaking, located on the Pier at the Bowen Island Marina, immediately after you exit the ferry. I recommend calling and making a reservation for your kayak rental ahead of time in the summer months when it’s the busiest.
My favourite beach is the semi-secluded Pebbly Beach, located on the north side of Mannion Bay. It’s not within walking distance but you can hitch-hike there. If hitch-hiking is not your thing, there are taxis available.
Where to Eat
The Snug Cafe is my main go-to for breakfast and lunch on Bowen Island; they have really delicious food. I love their breakfast wraps which are great for lunch too. Nancy’s Tacos is also an amazing lunch spot, located along the Pier at the Bowen Island Marina. There’s also a great little ice cream shop next door!
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed this post and hopefully it inspired you to visit Bowen Island for the day! Please leave a comment below if there are any other must see spots or things to do on Bowen Island that I might have missed. xoxo Candice
